Chess News & Strategy

Boris Avrukh's

5×5 Chess Wisdom Sessions

1
Know your pawn chains before you castle. The king's safety depends on what the pawns in front of it will do two moves from now, not just where they are today.
2
The bishop you trade away matters as much as the one you keep. Every exchange changes the color landscape permanently.
3
Activity beats material in 80% of endgames. A rook on the 7th rank is worth the pawn you gave up to put it there.
4
Don't play the move you want — play the move the position needs. These are different things more often than you think.
5
Silence your opening preparation at move 12. After that, it's just chess. The player who thinks better wins.

♛ Female Chess Style

Cover Story · Style & Identity

Why Girls Who Play Chess
Deserve Their Own Style

At Wit-T-Shirt, we believed chess apparel should be original, never generic. Chess is personal. It is confidence. It is identity. It is passion. And for many girls and women who love the game, most chess apparel never truly reflected that — so we decided to create something different.

Not just another "unisex" design with smaller sizing and a different color. An actual collection designed with women and girls in mind — their energy, their confidence, their style, their voice, and their love for chess.

— Wit-T-Shirt · Wear Chess Matters

Because when a young girl walks into a chess tournament wearing something that feels made for her, it changes something subtle but important. She feels seen. She feels included. She feels like chess belongs to her too. That confidence carries onto the board.

The Queen Philosophy

The Most Powerful Piece on the Board

She moves with freedom, creativity, reach, and force. She changes the momentum of a game instantly. The queen attacks, defends, sacrifices, and protects. She is the reason we design the way we do.

Wear What Speaks to You

Who Says a Guy Can't Wear a Design Inspired by Women?

Strength, intelligence, style, wit, creativity, and passion for chess are not owned by one gender. A great design is a great design. If it speaks to you, wear it. Wear your passion.

"Hi I'm Zoe! I've been playing chess since I was 5. Now I'm able to make it my job, travel and explore the world while doing what I'm most passionate about!"

Not From a Business Plan — From a Chess Club

It started with a chess club, a teacher, and 50 kids who loved the game. That decision — to open up what was working inside one classroom to the wider chess community — is how Wit-T-Shirt was born. Original art. Real people. No AI.

♚ Community

It Is All About
Promoting Chess.

Those are Ms. Rose's own words — and they have guided everything we have done since the beginning. For some 25 years, Ms. Rose has been teaching chess to beginners and getting them started in the game. For 14 of those years, Wit-T-Shirt has been alongside that mission — offering her Wit-T brand chess shirts to the community she helped build. Every design is original, human-drawn, and made for people who live the game — not just play it.

"We've done the work, getting in the door to events, proving our worth at all levels, and giving back to the chess community."

— Ms. Rose, Founder · Wit-T-Shirt

At her peak, Ms. Rose had as many as 50 students actively learning chess — with another 57 more waiting in the wings to join. She also organized and hosted the first Title One chess tournament in Hillsborough County, Florida — a milestone for scholastic chess in the region. From that starting point the mission grew, reaching teams, schools, districts, and chess organizations across Florida and beyond.
